WHAT IS THE DISEASE?

Monkeypox is a disease which is attributed to a virus in the same family of smallpox but is not that severe, while it can be deadly to people contract the disease. Monkeypox virus belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the family Poxviridae. The Orthopoxvirus genus also includes variola virus (which causes smallpox), vaccinia virus (used in the smallpox vaccine), and cowpox virus.

SYMPTOMS OF MONKEYPOX?

Early symptoms of monkeypox include a fever, headache, back pain, muscle aches and low energy, WHO officials said. That then progresses to a rash on the face, hands, feet, eyes, mouth or genitals that turns into raised bumps, or papules, that then become blisters that often resemble chicken pox. Those can then fill with a white fluid, becoming a pustule, that breaks and scabs over.

According to World Health Organization, Monkeypox does not spread easily between people.

Spread of monkeypox may occur when a person comes into close contact with an infected animal, human, or materials contaminated with the virus.

Vaccination against smallpox can be used for both pre and post-exposure and is up to 85% effective in preventing monkeypox.
