Today is World Arthritis Day, a global initiative to raise awareness and support for people living with arthritis. Arthritis is a term that refers to more than 100 different conditions that affect the joints, causing pain, stiffness, inflammation, and damage. Some of the most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and gout.
There are some lab tests that can help doctors to identify and monitor arthritis. Biomarkers are substances that can be measured in the blood or joint fluid and serve as indicators of normal or abnormal processes in the body.
One of the most widely used biomarkers for arthritis is rheumatoid factor (RF), which is an antibody that is often found in the blood of people with rheumatoid arthritis.
Another biomarker that is more specific to rheumatoid arthritis is anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP), which is an antibody that targets proteins that have been modified by a process called citrullination. Citrullination occurs in inflamed tissues and can trigger an immune response in some people, leading to rheumatoid arthritis. Anti-CCP is not only useful for diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis, but also for predicting its severity and progression.
Besides RF and anti-CCP, there are other biomarkers that can help to diagnose and monitor arthritis, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), which are indicators of inflammation; angiotensinogen (AGT), serum amyloid A-4 protein (SAA4), vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP), and retinol-binding protein-4 (RBP4), which are proteins that have been found to be differentially expressed in the blood of people with rheumatoid arthritis; and antinuclear antibody (ANA), which is an antibody that can be detected in some autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis.
If you or someone you know has symptoms of arthritis, such as joint pain, swelling, stiffness, or reduced mobility, we encourage you to consult your doctor and ask for a biomarker test. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a difference in preventing joint damage and improving quality of life.
