On 13th December, Japan‘s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has confirmed that a man from Saitama Prefecture, who is in his 30s, has died with Monkeypox. This is the first confirmed death case of Mpox in Japan.[1] He was confirmed to be infected with Mpox in September this year, and died last month. He is also said to be infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), therefore he was immunocompromised.
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced the rename Monkeypox to Mpox in November 2022, aiming for a more neutral and accurate term, for the purpose of anti stigma and discrimination.[2]
Mpox usually causes symptoms such as fever and rash, for most cases, the symptoms are mild and self-limiting. While for young children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised people, it can develop severe symptoms. The fatality rate of Mpox is said to be about 0%, but there have been cases of severe illness and death in people infected with HIV or immunodeficient due to other diseases.
